Prep/1/2 Class News
It’s been a great week in the junior classroom, with lovely weather, new faces and testing taking place. It’s been really good to see how far the students have progressed since the start of the year with their reading, writing, spelling and numeracy topics. I’m very proud of the hard work and commitment the students in our class have shown which is proof in the results we’re seeing. I’d also like to welcome Connor in Grade 2 and Lochi in Grade 1 who have joined our class this week. The boys have settled in nicely and it’s been good to have some new friends for the students to work and play with whilst at school.
In Religion this week, we continue to look at the different aspects of being religious and what it means to be involved in or a part of a community of believers. The students have explored the concept of ‘invitation’ and are learning to understand that a religious belief can’t be forced on you, but instead needs to be entered into with an open mind and an open heart – you are invited to be a part of this community. As a part of our lessons, we’ve been exploring what it means to be a Catholic – we pray, we read the bible, we sing songs about God, we recognise important Catholic symbols and so on. The students have been learning about some of the popular bible stories such as ‘Noah’s Ark’ and ‘Jesus and the Fisherman’ and have been reflective on what the stories could mean for us today.
In Maths we’ve been continuing to work hard on measurement concepts, exploring language used to describe size and length and having a go at measuring things around the classroom and our school. The Preps have been learning how to measure things using informal units such a popsicle sticks and blocks and have done a good job at recording their answers. The Grade 1/2’s have been learning how to estimate (make a good guess) before choosing an appropriate unit for measuring and then checking their answers.
3/4/5/6 Class News
A big welcome to Willow and Sophie who joined our 3/4/5/6 room this week.
In Literary this week students have been reading about the Ancient Wonders of the World in their shared reading. They have been exploring the vocabulary of Common Era (CE) and Before Common Era (BCE) in reference to time periods. Students have been looking at what information has been included and why and how this information text is structured for the audience. Students have worked on using this information presented to write their own descriptions of one of the landmarks in small groups. Students were able to use this information in conjunction with their writing skills (spelling, grammar, punctuation, sequencing and paragraphing) to produce a historical fictional text.
In Maths this week students have completed their work on graphing and data. Students are working on their understanding of chance and the probability of certain events or outcomes occurring. Year 3 students have been conducting experiments to do with chance (such as flipping a coin) and using terms such as likely, unlikely and more likely to describe their results. Year 4 students are using terms such as certain, unlikely, never, even chance and possible to describe the chances of everyday events occuring. Year 5 students have being using terms such as certain and impossible to describe the outcomes of chance experiments and are working in using fractions to describe likelihood- such as 1.0 for certain outcomes. Year 6 student is describing probabilities using fractions and decimals- such as 0.5 for even chance.
In Science students have been learning about earthquakes and how they occur. They have learnt about the different parts of an earthquake and what P and S waves are. Students participated in an activity that explored the impact of P waves on different surfaces and/or distance from 'earthquake'.
