Term 3 Week 9 2022
Principal's Report
I am very proud of the children with their endeavour and their performance at the Calder Athletic Sports. We had all children on deck and they tried very hard to do their best and were very successful. We won the track and field and we came second in the relays, which is a magnificent feat as we had many children running out of their age groups so we could field as many relay teams as possible on the day. This year was more difficult than others because we had to deal with consistent wet weather, covid and the flu which made practice very challenging.
We had a great Father's Day celebration with the egg and bacon rolls for breakfast. A big thank you to Cate for organising everything, to Jason, Emily and Bianca for helping on the day and to all of the Father's grandfathers and uncles who came along to support their children. A great time was had by all and I was even asked if we can make it a weekly event!
Next week the 3/4/5/6 children will be going on school camp to Boomerang Ranch in Daylesford, and the prep/1/2 children will be going on an excursion to the Bendigo Discovery Centre and Jumpz. The Prep/1/2 class will also be attending the St Patricks St Arnaud school musical on Wednesday.
A big thank you to Bianca Winslade for her work in setting up the community garden so it will be weed free in ensuring years. It has been a big job and it is great to see it nearing completion.
Our outdoor learning area has been completed. We thank Danny Wright for all his work in the planning and construction of the shelter.
We have been contacted by Martin Vale Dentistry in Bendigo to see if their is any interest for families to utilise their mobile dentist. If you are interested, please leave your families name at the office.
DOBCEL has decided to readvertise the position of Principal at St Joseph's. They are widening the net to hopefully attract some suitable candidates.

Prep/1/2 Class News
This week in the junior class we’ve been working hard on practicing our spelling rules. The students have been learning to recognise letter combinations that make the same sound and then determining which is the ‘best choice’ spelling rule to use when spelling different words, i.e. ‘ir’, ‘er’, ‘ur’. For example, ‘er’ is sometimes used in the middle of words, but often used at the end like in ‘fern’ and ‘hammer’. The students have been improving with the spelling choices that they make and we’ve been impressed to see this in their daily writing pieces. Well done everyone!
On Thursday the students competed in the Calder Sports Athletics Day at Charlton Park. Each student was connected up with their age group and moved around the arena participating in events including hurdles, sprints, long distance, long jump, discus, shotput and vortex. Everyone put in their best effort as they competed against their peers and scored a 3, 2 or 1 for their attempts. Once the main events were finished, we were excited for our relay races to begin which the whole school has worked hard on perfecting their change over and racing skills. Amazingly, the students won 4 out of 5 of their races and came second place in the fifth. Superb effort! To finish the day off, we gathered all together and the overall scores for each school were read out for the day’s events. St Joseph’s came first place in the track and field and second place in the relays. Also a special mention to Flynn Zagame in our class who achieved scores of 3 in every event. Awesome job!
On Friday we gathered early in the morning with the Dad’s of our community for a special Father’s Day BBQ Breakfast. Mr McGrath and Mr Whatnall cooked up a mountain of bacon and eggs, whilst Mrs Lanyon and Mrs Winslade busily made cuppas and served up the yummy breakfast to the students and their Dads. In class the students made cards with a ‘shirt and tie paper pop up’ on the front and then wrote special messages to their Dads. We also made special ‘shrinky dink’ handprint keyrings where the students printed their hand onto plastic and decorated a piece with coloured textas before these were placed into the oven and the students watched on in excitement as their creations shrunk down to a fraction of the original size!! We added the keyring loops and their gifts were ready. It was a great vibe amongst the students and their Dad’s and the breakfast and gifts were much appreciated! Thanks for a great morning everyone.
We are excited for our excursion to the Science Discovery Centre and Jumpz Trampoline Park next Tuesday. We will be leaving school at 8.15am and returning at roughly 4pm. Can all students please wear their sports uniform and bring a small backpack with their drink bottle, morning tea and a hat for the day. Lunch will be provided. Please ask me if you have any enquiries.
3/4/5/6 Class News
Thank you to everyone who came to the Father’s Day Breakfast. A great morning had by all.
Students have been learning about chemical safety on the farm this week in their shared reading. Students have been working on using reading strategies, such as chunking to read unfamiliar words found in the text. They have also been using context clues to understand different language found in the text, such as the word inhalation. Students have been working on a persuasive techniques in their writing. They are currently working on the topic ‘Should Quad Bike Riders Wear Safety Equipment’ in their own writing. Students are completing their video submissions on farm safety- editing the videos to ensure that their message comes through clearly. Students have enjoyed the challenge of combining the theatrical aspects of role play with facts to present an interesting video of how to be safe on a farm.
In Maths, students are continuing to work on location and transformation. Year 5 students are working on consolidating their understanding of grid references, scales and using these scales to follow directions in kilometres on a map. Year 3 students are working on understanding and identifying grid references. Year 6 students are working on understanding the ‘Cartesian plane’ that involves the x and y axis using grid references and negative numbers. Year 4 students are working on reading a map using grid references and scales in metres. They are also working on following directions on a map to find a certain point.
In Religion we are completing our unit on hospitality and what this means with a religious lense.
Contract 27 homework and spelling words due this Friday please. There will be no homework or spelling next week due to school camp.

Humour
A group of Australians were travelling on a bus tour through Switzerland. As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat’s milk was used. She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing. “These are the older goats that are put out to pasture when they no longer produce.” She then asked, ”What do they do in Australia with your old goats?” A spry old gentleman answered, “They send them on a bus tour.”
