    Principal's Report

Hello Parents and Friends of St Joseph's Community.  Well one might ask where has the term gone.  It seems to have gone so quickly.  We have had Murray MacDonald here, the Education Consultant, working with the staff in preparation for the school review on June 9th/1oth this year.  Our school reviewer is Mrs Sheridan Cloverdale and we look forward to working with her.  Thank you to the staff for all of their hard work throughout the term.  It has certainly been busy.

I wish everyone a safe, happy and holy Easter and school commences for Term 2 on Tuesday April 26th.

    Prep/1/2 Class News

This week we are reading a book called Anabel’s Chewy-Gooey Birthday Cake by Ken Williams where Chef Pierre must create his most fabulous cake ever for the fussy Anabel. Students have enjoyed the challenge in language when describing Chef Pierre’s actions and eventual creations. Foundation students have been consolidating their high frequency words and letter recognition, with a particular focus on B, J and long A this week. Year 1 and Year 2 students have been focusing on reading high frequency words, using expression in their reading and knowing when to do so, using strategies to break up and read unfamiliar words and identifying information in the text to help their understanding. Students have been working on creative writing this week focused on celebrations, birthday cakes and treasures! Year 1 and Year 2 students have focused on sequencing their ideas, using interesting vocabulary and using compound and complex sentences. Foundation students have written about the same topics as Year 1 and Year 2 students, and worked on orally constructing and writing simple sentences independently.

In Maths this week we are finishing our unit on subtraction. Year 1 and Year 2 are consolidating their understanding of subtraction, including associated vocabulary, strategies and applying this knowledge to solve word problems. Year 2 students have worked on understanding borrowing in subtraction with two digit numbers. Foundation students have worked on understanding subtraction with counters using numbers 0-30. Foundation students have continued to work on reading and writing their numbers from 0-30 and beyond.

In Music, we understand that music can be heard, and made with just about anything. Students have been doing body percussion routines, using claps, clicks and stomps to make music.

I wish you all a very happy and safe Easter and look forward to working with you all in Term 2.
