This week in Literacy we have been reading 'Olga the Brolga' by Rod Clement. Students have enjoyed the interesting language and different characters within the story. We have been focusing on identifying nouns, verbs, adjectives and compound words in our reading this week. Students are continuing to practice skills such as using expressive voice, punctuation for fluency and breaking up unfamiliar and familiar words when reading aloud. In writing Year 1 and Year 2 have continued to work on persuasive writing, focusing on how to write a clear opinion about a topic and support it with reasons. Students have been working on connecting ideas in sentences. Foundation students have continued to work on sentence construction with the teacher orally and work on writing these in their books. We have used the characters from our text 'Olga the Brolga' in our writing this week and have had some great sentences come from this.
In Maths we are continuing to work on the concept of subtraction- what it is, vocabulary of subtraction, different ways to calculate sums and word problems involving subtraction. Year 2 students are working on strategies to understand, determine what type of sums is needed (addition or subtraction) and solve word problems. Year 1 students are also working on word problems, focused on understanding the language that indicates it is a subtraction sum and how to solve these. Foundation students continue to consolidate subtraction using numbers to 20 and are working on numbers to 30. Students are using materials such as counters to help them solve these sums and are able to write their sums on whiteboards.
In Religion we have read the scripture Luke 19:1-10 Zacchaeus and are unpacking our understanding of the scripture and linking the ways that it is linked with our personal and modern lives and society and the ways that they can be impacted by this scripture.

Humour
Donal Callaghan, a Limerick University student, was on the side of the road hitch-hiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a big storm.
The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped. Donal, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door only to realise there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on.
The car started moving slowly. Donal looked at the road ahead and saw a bend approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the bend, a hand appeared out of nowhere through the window and turned the wheel. Donal, paralysed with terror, watched as the hand came through the window, but never touched or harmed him.
Shortly thereafter Donal saw the lights of a pub appear down the road, so, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had.
A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realised he was crying and.... wasn't drunk.
Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the dark and stormy night. They, like Donal, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing Donal Callaghan sobbing at the bar, one said to the other...
'Look Paddy.....there's that idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!'
